5 ways to decide which clothes to let go of

The start of a new year often brings the urge for a fresh start – but when it comes to your wardrobe, that can quickly turn into overwhelm. Too many clothes, nothing to wear, and a pile of “maybes” staring back at you every morning.
The good news? Letting go of clothes doesn’t have to be ruthless, emotional, or exhausting. It can be simple, kind, and surprisingly freeing. Here are easy, no-guilt ways to decide what stays and what goes, without overthinking every hanger.

1. The Getting Ready Test

Pay attention to what happens on busy mornings.
When you’re in a rush, running late, half-awake, no time to faff, which clothes do you instinctively reach for? And just as importantly, which pieces do you skip over again and again without even consciously deciding not to wear them?
If you haven’t reached for an item in months – especially when time is tight – that’s valuable information. Clothes you love and feel good in don’t need convincing.

2. The 30-Second Outfit Rule

Give yourself 30 seconds to build a real, wearable outfit around that piece using items you already own.
    • Only works with one very specific item
    • Can’t be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits
    • Requires special shoes, weather, or a version of you that appears twice a year
    • Needs “saving for” the right moment
…then it’s probably just taking up space.

3. Does the Colour Actually Work for You?

Ask yourself:
  • Does this colour sit harmoniously with my seasonal colour palette?
  • Does it make me look fresh and healthy, or slightly tired and washed out?
  • Does it naturally work with other colours already in my wardrobe?
If a colour doesn’t support you, you’ll often avoid wearing it, even if you can’t explain why. Clothes in your best colours are easier to wear, easier to style, and far more likely to become wardrobe staples.

4. Is It for the Current You?

Ask yourself honestly:
Would I feel comfortable wearing this today, in my current body and life?
If it doesn’t support who you are right now, either store it intentionally or let it go – without guilt.

5. Let Your Wardrobe Show You the Truth

Turn all your hangers around or move everything you wear to the front of your wardrobe.
After a few weeks, anything still sitting at the back or on a reversed hanger has quietly shown you it’s not part of your everyday life.

Decluttering your wardrobe isn’t about being strict or getting rid of everything. It’s about creating space — mentally and physically — for clothes that actually support you. This new year, think of your wardrobe as a tool:
  • It should make mornings easier
  • Help you feel confident in your body
  • Reflect who you are now
Letting go doesn’t mean failure. It means clarity – one of the best fresh starts you can give yourself.
